WHY BOCA CHICA?

Boca Chica is an amusing and lively beach town, year round. Here you can enjoy an atmosphere of freedom shared with the warm and peaceful Dominican people. Boca Chica Beach is situated in a bay on the beautiful Carribean Sea, and is protected by a mile long reef 400 yards offshore from the beach. The water is perfect for swimmers and children. It is safe, calm and multihued from dark blue beyond the reef, light sky blue in the middle, to a near white as the water approaches gently laps the shore.

Because Boca Chica is 6 miles East of Las Americas International Airport, you can be on the beach minutes after clearing customs. The Airport (SDQ) is the largest in the country and also serves the Capital, Santo Domingo, 20 miles to the West.

RESTAURANTS

Most of Boca Chica's restaurants are located on the beach or on the main drag, Avenida Duarte. A good choice is to have lunch on the beach (fantastic view, fresh breeze) and get dinner on Duarte complete with its entertaining sideshow. Many long-term visitors have discovered several fine restaurants “up the hill.”

Puerco Rosado: restaurant and bar, excellent Italian cuisine, safes for valuables, and all services.

Sporting Clubcharming restaurant bar, Italian cuisine,  on the beach, near the dock with deep-sea fishing boats.

BOCA CHICA NIGHT LIFE

There are several discos in Boca Chica that play a combination of dance, pop, house music, and of course, salsa and merengue.

Couples and families usually stay at the large all-inclusive hotels that have their own discos and nightly shows.

Boca Chica is fantastic for singles.

The warm atmosphere, bachata and merengue music, and the free spirit of the local people, make nightlife magic.

Given the large numbers of singles flocking to Boca Chica's many non all-inclusive hotels, areas in Boca Chica's downtown take on an "adults only" atmosphere at night.

Albeit, most of the single men will be foreigners and the women local.

The singles usually stay at the many small local hotels that dot the beach town and party at the town's bars. But days in Boca Chica are quite tranquil compared to Nassau Bahamas or Cancun. After all, this is a small intimate town.

SHOPPING

In Boca Chica, the main shopping strip is one block inland from and parallel to the beach. It’s only about 5 or 6 blocks long, but it has everything you need to take back home: rum, cigars, coffee, artwork, and crafts etc. And if you need items like sunscreen, bug spray or sandals, you’ll find the prices better on Duarte Street than in the hotel shops. Some designer boutiques have begun to crop up, as well. Most stores accept pesos, US dollars, traveler’s checks or credit cards. Banco Popular at the far west end of the shopping area has an ATM machine. There’s another bank machine directly in front of the Hamaca hotel, and another in Boca Chica Beach Resort. On the beach, shopping is an adventure. The goods come to you, usually in briefcases carried by friendly vendors.

Prices on the beach are usually inflated to take haggling into account. You are expected to barter. You can buy everything on the beach, from local food to amber, larimar and silver jewelry, Haitian style paintings, wood carvings, manicure/pedicure, a massage, or a head full of braids. For a wider selection, you could make the short trip into Santo Domingo. But many tourists get just as good prices in Boca Chica.
