Puerto Plata is located on the north coast of the Dominican Republic, 15 miles north-west of Sosua. You can rich Puerto Plata from Santo Domingo Capital City, by bus with Caribe Tours and Metro Tours; by car through Autopista Duarte (highway No 1) towards the north. Arrived at the junction of Villa Bisono, take exit 5 towards Puerto Plata. The highway No 5 and is the coastal road connecting Puerto Plata to Samana

Puerto Plata is the greatest city of the northern coast. Geographically it is part of the Northern Cordillera, with a maximum height of 800 meters above sea level. Driving along the Don José Ginebra road, it is possible get to the top of the Isabel de La Torres hill, where is the large statue of Christ the Redeemer. Puerto Plata was founded in 1502. The city was designed by brothers Christopher and Bartholomew Columbus in 1496.

Puerto Plata is surrounded by the sea and mountains. To the north of the city, the Atlantic Ocean bathes beautiful golden sandy beaches. To the west, perched on a small peninsula, stands majestic and lonely San Felipe Castle(1540).

The lighthouse, built of iron with a solid masonry base, in 1879 during the government of General Gregorio Luperon, reaches 137 meters above sea level.

To the east, there is the beautiful Long Beach, surrounded by almond and palm trees. Playa Dorada is one of the most exclusive destinations of the Amber Coast.

The cableway to Puerto Plata, is unique in the Dominican Republic and in the West Indies. You can visit the Isabel de Torres hill with the statue of Christ Redeemer and see Puerto Plata on the coast with an exceptional view. The cableway, Italian-built, was inaugurated in 1975, can carry a maximum of seventeen people and takes 8 minutes in the route that connects the hill to the city.

For lovers of ecotourism, the possibility of rafting, jeep safari, paragliding, or safari to Siete Chorreras and to Limon waterfalls, with the assistance of experienced guides. In the area of Playa Dorada, in the winter, enjoy the show of the humpback whales reaching Banco de la Plata to give birth to their offspring.
