Larimar, the history

History

The Larimar was discovered in 1916 in Barahona, in the south-west of the Dominican Republic, by a Spanish priest Miguel Domingo Fuertes Loren, pastor of Barahona. On 22 November the same year the priest reminder permission to explore and exploit the mine, but permission was refused because in the Dominican Republic this type of pectolite was unknown.

The Larimar was rediscovered in 1974, in the foothills of Bahoruco, in the coastal province of Barahona, when Miguel Mendez and Norman Rilling, volunteers from the U. S. Peace Corps, as they walked on the sand, discovered by chance a gem with the particular color combinations are very similar to those of the sea. Miguel, amazed by the color of this gemstone, joined her daughter's name, Larissa, that of the sea, coining the term Larimar. Were later found other samples from alluvial sediments, but soon formed a veritable mine in Los Chupaderos, about 10 kilometers southwest of the city of Barahona, in the south-western region of the Dominican Republic.

The prophecy

Edgar Cayce (pictured above), known clairvoyant and healer, predicted in 1910 that one of the islands of the Caribbean, where they were the remains of the land of Atlantis, would emerge a blue stone with extraordinary properties of Atlantean origin of healing.
