Larimar, the stone dolphin

The Larimar (tear of the sea), also known as "dolphin stone", and triclinic structure of volcanic origin, is a beautiful gem, one of the most new and rare in the world.

The Larimar has some reddish filaments due to the flowering of oxide of copper. The deposits are located close to the shores of the sea.

For this reason it was thought that the Larimas came from the sea, while the stones are dragged by the current of the rivers of the high mountains that cleans the impurities.

The Larimar, was discovered in 1916 in Barahona, in the south-west of the Dominican Republic, by a Spanish priest Miguel Domingo Fuertes, who had reported about mining but no action was taken.

Only in 1974 an American, Miguel Mendez, rediscovered on the beaches of Barahona.

The Larimar is mined only in the Dominican Republic by a single mine in the world, in Los Chupaderos, about 10 kilometers southwest of the city of Barahona, in the south-western region of the Dominican Republic.

It is also found in Bahoruco pebbles along the river, in the province of Barahona, home to the mine, in the south-west of the Dominican Republic.

It is a rare form of pectolite blue, a color that ranges from vibrant turquoise to pale green with white spots, reflecting the colors and energies of the Caribbean Sea, as waves moving on the stone.

The Larimar is better to cut into cabochon for jewelry in silver.

In the Dominican Republic there is the Larimar Museum which is located in the Colonial Zone of Santo Domingo.
