Why Higuey
Higuey, with nice houses (las casitas) in the typical dominican architecture, was founded in 1494 by Juan de Esquivel, conqueror of Jamaica, and after extended between 1502 and 1508 by the captain Juan Ponce de Leon. Higuey is the most important pilgrimage destination of Altagracia Virgin devoteds, island patron saint. Here, every years, on January 21, thousands pilgrims come from all sides to visit the Nuestra Senora de Altagracia Sanctuary, where participate in the High Mass. The church contains the most big carillon of the continent.
